Willie stark

Kölner Tanztheaterpreis 2025 nominee
Teacher at Köln university since 2025

Choreographer, dancer, curator and director of company Stark

Welcome !

Willie Stark is a Paris-born artist with roots in Kampala, Uganda, whose practice moves between dance, choreography, direction, curating, and cultural entrepreneurship. Working at the intersection of Urban, African, and contemporary dance techniques, she has developed a distinct transdisciplinary language merging movement, voice, text, and performative storytelling.

Her work is deeply engaged with the political and social urgencies of our time, exploring identity, resistance, gender, intergenerational narratives, and the body as a site of transformation. Through a choreographic approach that is both visceral and intellectually charged, Stark positions dance not only as an artistic medium, but as a language of resistance, liberation, and collective imagination.

Over the years, she has collaborated with leading international institutions including FFT Düsseldorf, Tanzhaus NRW, LWL Museum Münster, Kampnagel Hamburg, Philharmonie Liège, PACT Zollverein, BOZAR, and Schauspielhaus Dortmund. Alongside her artistic practice, she is currently a teacher at the University of Cologne and other institutions, contributing to contemporary discourse around performance and decolonial artistic practices.

Her choreographic body of work, including EXOTIQUES, nominated for the Kölner Tanztheater Prize 2025, as well as Wombs of Revolution, Chapt(her)s, Louves, and Le bal des masques, has established her as a singular voice within the contemporary performance landscape. Her creations are recognized for their emotional intensity, strong physicality and ability to brindge intimate narratives to collective experiences.

Beyond performance, Willie Stark is actively shaping the cultural ecosystem through curatorial and community-driven initiatives. She is the founder, curator, and artistic director of Tales festival in FFT Düsseldorf and NEXUS rendez-vous in Alte Feuerwache Köln.

She is widely recognized as a cultural innovator and one of the most influential figures in the international House dance scene. She won and participated in many battles including Juste debout Paris and House dance forever.
